A compelling book which talks about successes beyond individual geniuses, although success is a mix of our cultural legacies, time periods, and opportunities.

It certainly does takes a village to raise a child.

Highlights:

  • Success is not just one’s making, but product of the world in which we grow up.
  • Successful people are products of history and community, of opportunity and legacy. Their success is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages – some inherited, some deserved, some not, some just plain lucky – but all critical in making them who they are.

No one makes It alone.

Not even professional athletes, billionaires or even geniuses.

  • Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for 22 minutes which others would give up on 30 seconds.

Outliers are those who have been given opportunities and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.

And of-course the happiness to finish another book!

The book reminded me of the Subject ‘Strategy beyond markets’ taught @ Stanford SEED and perfectly resonates with it, just like how external factors affect businesses, our communities, legacies, cultures affect how successful we are.

The Outlier in the end is not an outlier at all!
